GNOMIC DOOMSDAY

What happens when generations inherit not only a homeland, but also its wounds?

Gnomic Doomsday was born from my reflections on the history of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the millions of lives shaped by displacement, exploitation, and the struggle to preserve human dignity. As a Congolese refugee, I have often wondered how suffering can echo across generations, quietly becoming part of our identity before we even recognize its presence.

Created through the symbolic language of Dotism, this painting explores the invisible cycles that bind history to the present. Fragmented forms, layered textures, and expressive gestures speak of memories carried by families and communities whose labour, dreams, and freedoms have too often been sacrificed for systems that offered little in return. Yet the work is not simply about the past—it is about the choices we make today and the future we have the courage to imagine.

Within The World of Circles, doomsday is not understood as the end of everything. Instead, it represents a moment of awakening—the point at which inherited pain can no longer remain hidden and transformation becomes possible. Every collapse carries the possibility of renewal, and every act of remembrance becomes an opportunity to reclaim identity, purpose, and freedom.

Although inspired by the history of the Congo, Gnomic Doomsday speaks to a universal human experience. Around the world, countless people inherit conflicts, inequalities, and histories they did not choose. The painting asks each viewer to reflect on their own story: Who shapes our identity? What histories do we carry? And at what point does survival become the beginning of true freedom?

Ultimately, Gnomic Doomsday is a work about resilience. It honours those who endured, gives voice to memories too often forgotten, and affirms the enduring human capacity to transform suffering into hope.
